Masters of Pie and a consortium of companies including BT, Dell, Ericsson, NVIDIA, Qualcomm and The Grid Factory have won the award for “VR Enterprise Solution of the Year” at the 5th Annual VR Awards brought by the Academy of International Extended Reality (AIXR).
The award-winning solution called “VR Design Review over 5G” is a groundbreaking XR collaboration use case delivered for Hyperbat, a joint venture between Unipart and Williams Advanced Engineering specialised in electric vehicle battery chassis manufacturing. Each consortium member contributed with their state-of-art technology aiming to solve the handover between design and manufacturing.
The car manufacturing industry estimates that decisions made during the design process influence 70% of the total production costs. The Hyperbat solution allows the engineering teams to interrogate the digital twin by leveraging VR to identify misunderstandings and errors during the design process before committing to the sourcing of suppliers and the physical manufacturing and assembly of the product. By capturing issues in software the solution ultimately saves on wastage, preparation iteration cycles, maintenance, and time to market.
The VR application is based on the Radical SDK from Masters of Pie integrated directly into the CAD software application. The Radical SDK enables one-click VR and VR collaboration functionality. Individual users are able to seamlessly visualise CAD models in an immersive context without having to export sensitive data to standalone applications, whilst being able to collaborate in real-time with other team members across different geographical locations.
This world-first VR experience leverages enabling technologies from BT (mmWave spectrum), Ericsson (5G private network), Nvidia (server-side rendering and cloud streaming), and Qualcomm (5G enabled VR reference design headset).
With this foundational architecture in place the consortium will evolve the trial to develop innovative use cases using AR to introduce extended reality (XR) solutions onto the factory floor, bringing people, data, processes and supply chains together.
